New Archive Release: Packards' Vibration

   

The Packards' theme, or "Packards' Vibration", debuted with the intro of Andrew Packard at the end of episode 18 and became the Packards' dominant theme for the rest of the series. The version released on the second soundtrack was one of several tracks "spruced up" for the release. It featured a sped-up "Freshly Squeezed (Solo Vibraphone) at the beginning of the track, and also is slightly sped up and altered.

The original version has now been released from the TP Archive.

New Archive update: Evelyn's Mourning

Last week's James & Evelyn bundle included a version of "Evelyn's Mourning" that was actually a mix patterned after the version heard in episode 22. But didn't include either original version. Both unaltered original versions of the track have now been found in the Archives. The bundle has been amended to include them now. Here is a free link to the proper archive version of 'Evelyn's Mourning.' Oddly enough, it was lumped in with the label 'Dark Intro' (the subject of this week's release), which is why it wasn't initially located. Not that anything in the archive is usually named what it actually relates to. It all ties in, however, as you can clearly hear the same 'Evelyn's Mourning' ascend in this week's 'Dark Intro #2.' Also included is a very nice additional extended take of 'Evelyn's Mourning' with a bit of riffing off of the main refrain...

New Archive Release: Dark Intro bundle

   

   

   

This week's new release is six never-before heard "intro" variations of LPT. None were used on the show, but their familiar strains of the intro section of LPT make them instantly recognizable as TP tracks. Very cool to hear completely unheard music from the Twin Peaks universe 20+ years later.

New Archive Release: James & Evelyn bundle

I've been waiting for this release for a while now. The James and Evelyn story line is certainly one of the least liked among TP fans. Although I've actually never disliked it nearly as much as others. For one, I think many of the scenes are stylishly shot. And also because the great music tracks "Night Bells" and "James & Evelyn" were heavily featured. I've been waiting for the original version of "James & Evelyn" since the archive releases started. And here we finally have it.

When the second soundtrack was released, the montage track (identified only as) "I'm Hurt Bad" actually featured a different, unheard version of "James & Evelyn". That track was made up of:

- Only the first 35 seconds of "I'm Hurt Bad"

- About 15 seconds of the original "James & Evelyn"

- And about 1 minute of (slightly edited) "James & Evelyn (Trail Mix)"

I was pretty disappointed with the track at the time because unlike some of the other soundtrack montages, I didn't feel the montage aspect worked very well with these two tracks. And more importantly, it shortchanged both. I did, however, love this unheard "bass" version of "James & Evelyn" and wished for a full version.

Well I got one of the biggest surprises of the Archive releases this week because that full track has been released. And its an amazing 9+ minute version that goes right into my top ten TP tracks of all time. It really surprises me that it was never used on the show, especially in the James and Evelyn story. Amazing that even at this late date in the Archive releases, such a surprise can pop up.

Next up we have the piano track "Evelyn's Mourning". Oddly, instead of releasing either of the two unaltered original versions of the track, they made a mix as in episode 22 which ends with part of "Laura Palmer's Theme (Solo Piano)". Not sure why they did it this way. Both unaltered original versions popped up among the tracks that were leaked years ago (in not-great audio quality).

The fourth and final track in this release is also a surprise. The Opera track that is heard in episodes 1 & 22. I had no idea this was actually a Badalamenti track! But apparently it is. I wonder who the vocalist is? Or if it is based on an actual opera track.

New Archive Release: Love Theme (Dark)

This week's new one-track release is the version of the Love Theme that's heard in episode 12, in the memorable scene where Donna tells Harold a story for his "Living Novel". Its an extremely beautiful version of the track, and its surprising that it was only used in one episode of the series.

New Archive Release: Black Lodge bundle

   

   

Those waiting for the remaining slow speed orchestra tracks will be delighted with this week's new "Black Lodge bundle" release. FWWM fans will find a couple of treats as well.

First up we get an extremely interesting track. Only the first quarter of "The Culmination" was featured in episode 16 in the Leland/Bob/sprinkler scene. And after that only the very first segment of the track was used in episodes more like a sound effect. The last three quarters of the track are heard here for the first time, and feature distorted elements of "Sneaky Audrey" & "Laura Palmer's Theme".  The latter even briefly re-imagined as a waltz. Very interesting.

The final half speed track was most probably unused. Although it may be buried in a mix somewhere- I'm not 100% certain. It was released from the Archive without a title (just HSO7), but a member of the Dugpa forum christened it "Through The Darkness", so I'm going with that as well.

The final series track in this release is the stand-alone version of "The Red Room". This track was featured in its entirety as part of the montage track "Dark Mood Woods/The Red Room" on the second soundtrack. The television version runs much longer, but is actually just extended by looping sections of the track several times. The released version is the complete track.

We round out this week's release with two of the last remaining tracks from FWWM. "Distant Train" heard when Leland sits and cries on his bed. A very cool ambient track- I'm honestly not sure if its an actual sound recording of a train, or a created track. Not sure if having Angelo's name on there makes sense(?)

And finally the stripped-down version of "Laura's Dark Boogie" that accompanies Leland's flashback of Teresa, "You look just like my Laura". I actually prefer this version over the other.

The FWWM soundtrack is mostly complete now. The version of "The Pink Room" heard in the film is slightly different, so we may get a "Film Version"(?) And there is one unreleased slow speed orchestral track that plays before, and then under, "Night Bells", when Laura tells Bobby, "You killed Mike".

I'm surprised this release didn't pop up sooner, but here it is: the tracks that accompanied Ben's Civil War mental breakdown during season two. In addition to "Ben's Lament" and the full "Ben's Battle" track, we get the components that make up the track.

This week brings a fantastic 8 track bundle of (mostly) Great Northern related tracks.

Next up we finally get the 4th Great Northern Piano Tune (heard in episodes 25 & 26). Previously, I had posted one cover for all of the GNP tracks. But I've had requests for individual covers, so I'm presenting them here now.

One thing you will notice is that there is a 10 sec synth line in the track from about 1:43-1:53 from the soundtrack of episode 25 (Cooper sees the cuts on Annie's wrists). A bit odd, I wonder if perhaps this track was missing from the archives and was pulled from the episode soundtrack itself, resulting in the sound being included(?) The "wine tasting" scene in ep 26 uses the track sped up and looped (and this sound is absent in that scene).

So the only missing Piano track now would be the "extended" version of #2 that appears in episode 23. Not sure about this one. Maybe it was made from 2 tracks? I listened to it closer, and the first part of the track is the released version, and then the second half of the track has two small sections that may be loops from the released version, but there is one section that isn't from the (released) track, and I don't recognize if from any of the other 3 GNP tracks.

Next up are the 4 tracks used during the Milford wedding in episode 18. The numbering of the wedding tunes is a little weird, as its different than the TV order. Which would be #3 Accordion = #1, #1 = #2, and #2 ('Stranger Nights') = #3. So I changed them to match the TV order.

Lastly, we get a track that actually wasn't heard in the Great Northern. Although it was used as part of the released version (but not TV version) of "Twin Peaks (Nostalgia Version)". The Solo Harp version was only used once in the series (episode 21), and was actually never heard at its original speed (the released version). The episode features the tracks slowed down.

New Archive Release: One-Armed Man's Theme

This week's release is the "solo clarinet improv" that became associated with the One-Armed Man. It was mostly only heard mixed with other tracks on the show.

So far, this is the only version of this track released from the Archive. However, there are actually two other versions. There is one version that combines this clarinet solo and another solo (bass clarinet).
This "Combo" version was used as part of "Night Life In Twin Peaks" which is heard in this scene:

And it was the combo version that leaked as a bootleg a few years back.

Now the interesting part: The other solo (bass clarinet), on its own, is actually the solo that became "Jean Renault's Theme", heard (mixed with other tracks) in these scenes:

Anyway, great to have this one. And I'm really hoping we eventually get the other two versions, especially the Solo Bass "Jean Renault's Theme" version. Definitely still things to look forward to from the TP Archive!

New Archive release: Audrey's Dance DOTDM mixes

   

Along with this week's "Audrey's Dance/Sneaky Audrey" bundle, the Archive released three mixes of "Audrey's Dance" that are combinations of the fast version of "Audrey's Dance" with the solo versions of "Dance Of The Dream Man". These are fantastic, especially the Flute version. Surprisingly, none of these were ever used on the show. But luckily, they were in the Archives, and can now be heard!
